Berrys were instructed as heritage consultants in a supporting role to Herefordshire Council’s project manager to assist with the delivery of Leominster’s High Street Heritage Action Zone (link) programme. This scheme was funded by central-government and administered by Historic England to unlock the potential of 60 historic high streets across England.
The key aim of this project was to fuel economic, social and cultural recovery. We assisted in assessing grant applications, calculating grant offers and reporting to the steering group and Historic England on risks and progress as well as working with stakeholders and business owners, advising them on how to make the most of the funding available.
Using her heritage-led regeneration skills our Head of Heritage & Conservation successfully supported and advised the council in delivering these time-critical projects. Work has now been completed on some key buildings in the Leominster Conservation Area.
A traditional greengrocer on the high street received a facelift. Replacement cast iron guttering was installed as were timber facias and soffits. The building was repointed, and the windows were repaired.
The Rankin Club in Corn Square has had its roof replaced, along with repairs to the sash windows, chimneys and stucco façade. During the initial stages of work some older window openings were discovered; these have now been reinstated and the whole building is painted in more traditional colours to highlight the original row of terraced buildings.
