Onshore Wind

Reform of the planning system is at the heart of the new Government’s thinking. Keir Starmer’s first speech as PM placed a strong focus on ‘rebuilding’ the country’s ‘infrastructure of opportunity’, doing so ‘brick by brick’.

The Government is committed to doubling onshore wind energy by 2030 and has revised planning policy to put onshore wind on the same footing as other energy development in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).

The recent NPPF consultation called for views on whether to reform the way that the Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIP) regime applies to onshore wind, solar, data centres, laboratories, gigafactories and water projects, as the first step of the Government’s NSIP reform plans. The consultation closed on 24th September 2024 with the revised NPPF likely in effect by the end of the year.

We are already seeing activity with developers interested in option agreements to lease land for large scale onshore wind products here in the UK.
