Blackmarsh Cottage.

Project Overview

Our client approached Berrys to design a ‘contemporary dwelling’ to replace their existing house in South Shropshire.

The proposal will create a new family dwelling across a single storey. A double garage will provide space for two cars and storage below ground level while the ground floor will accommodate a large open plan kitchen/dining/living area, two en-suite bedrooms and a master bedroom.

The house is split into three main volumes which are linked together with a glazed walkway. This approach allows the dwelling to be more ‘permeable’ within its setting with views through it to the landscape beyond. The arrangement of the volumes also creates a natural south facing courtyard at the heart of the property. This is easily accessed via the glazed walkway, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The living area will be open plan with large glazed windows in order to maximise the extensive views around the property. Bi-fold doors lead to a balcony off the kitchen and provide tranquil views across the pond that the house cantilevers over.

The two guest bedrooms have far reaching views to the north west of the site, while the master bedroom will have glazed double doors which step down to a private south facing orchard.

The primary materials will be locally sourced timber to the south facing facades, while the north facing facades will be finished in zinc due to the harsh winter weather that is common in this site. The stone on the existing cottage will be reused to create feature walls around the proposed dwelling as a ‘nod’ to the existing house. These walls will be strategically placed to provide privacy as well as views through to the landscape around.

The glazed walkway will be finished with a sedum roof where wildflowers and greenery can flourish in order to visually soften the hard materials that surround them.
