Bright House is a modest size family home, designed to be adaptable in the coming years for a growing family. Located in the small village of Shrawardine, 7 miles to the West of Shrewsbury, the plot overlooks rolling countryside including views of Rodneys Pillar, Breidden Hills and the remains of Shrawardine Castle and settlement, a scheduled ancient monument.
The dwelling is designed sympathetically for its environs as framing these views was an important factor in window location and specification. Large glazing over the feature staircase allows for primary views of both Rodneys Pillar and the Briedden Hills from the landing space.
The dwelling itself was a careful compromise between the clients brief and the rules allowed within strict local planning authority criteria. As such floorspace is limited to a gross internal footprint of 100m2. Therefore, clever use of space and open spaces was critical and make this dwelling feel larger than its modest floor area. Red brick and dark window frames have also been chosen within the materials palette to help assimilate the home within the area once complete.
Carefully considered design features add to the sustainability factor of the core principles of this home. Featuring a contemporary solar shading screen to the front, south facing façade allowing for optimal solar gain across the year. An air source heat pump, in conjunction with a solar PV array will provide this home with a renewable source of heating and power. Whilst the principles of air tightness and use of an MVHR system ventilation make this house highly sustainable.
