With several steel-framed barns going unused, our client got in touch to see if we could help give them a whole new purpose. They wanted to transform them into 5 family homes, while keeping as much of their original character as possible.
Once we had taken a look at the site and reviewed the relevant planning policies, we found that the designs would need to be submitted as a Class Q application. This meant there would be all sorts of restrictions in place.
So, we went ahead and assessed the existing barns while bearing these restrictions in mind. We could then choose a suitable layout that would also make the most of the site.
We chose clear stained Western Red Cedar to complement the existing dark and weathered timber cladding, which we kept along with the profiled metal sheeting. We also included large areas of glazing to make the most of the amazing views and flood the internal spaces with natural light.
Our designs keep the rural character of the barns while also making them fit for modern-day living. The scheme has been granted planning approval, and will soon be listed on the open market as a development opportunity.
