Ollerton Hall.

Ollerton Hall.

Berrys were appointed as heritage consultants for the restoration and development of the Grade II* listed Ollerton Hall, Nottinghamshire into 8 new flats.

How We Approached The Project

In conducting an initial site visit we were able to identify all elements and features which give Ollerton Hall its architectural and historical significance.

The Hall is a fine representation of 18th century architectural style and includes features such as decorative stonework, ornate fireplaces and 18th century timber panelling. However, we also identified key areas of later and unsympathetic words which are harmful to the significance of the Hall including an unfinished modern lift shaft.

The Hall was built to accommodate Thomas Markham and his family; known Catholics living in a largely Protestant area the build included within its attic space a secret chapel in which the family could worship. During the early 20th century, the Hall was used by the National Coal Authority as workers accommodation after which point the hall became vacant and fell into disrepair. This resulted in the Hall being included on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.

How We Achieved The Project

By identifying the areas of interest or harm, we were able to work with the architects on approaching the redevelopment in a manner that sought to further reveal the historic significance of the site, whilst also making it viable as private dwellings.

The key to achieving this was the close working relationship that we formed with the client; this was integral to creating the comprehensive record of all the proposed changes and the areas which they impacted. This relationship was essential in the liaison with both the Local Planning Authority and Historic England. After frequent meetings and an open channel of dialogue in April 2023 we received the happy news that Newark and Sherwood Council had formally approved the proposal.
