The Farm House.

Project Overview

The Farm House is a beautiful, large family home resulting from an intention to replace a small, tired bungalow unsuitable for our clients needs. Located on the Western edge of Shrewsbury, this family home presents incredible views of the village church and has been orientated to allow for the maximised use of the evening sunlight, whilst allowing for a direct view of the farm buildings from its home office.

We were initially briefed with redesigning a prior replacement dwelling scheme that was unattractive, inefficient, and undesirable to our clients. Originally the local planning authority were not keen to deviate from the approval. Due to our continued dialogue and careful design approach we were able to successfully achieve a design that satisfied planning requirements and exceeded our clients’ expectations.

The dwelling itself is designed so that the roof takes inspiration from features often seen in bungalows and rural cottages, such as the additional roof gables over its windows that mimic a dormer window, and a Dutch hip roof. The materials palette was set using materials prevalent in the local vernacular; white render and dark windows found to the Southwest and red brick and timber windows to the Northeast. The culmination of these design decisions helps to add a familiar feel to this countryside development and aid in establishing itself as an integral part of the local fabric.
