Highways

Assisting you with a wide range of Highways and Transport Planning related services.

The Berrys Civil Engineering team can assist you with a wide range of Highways and Transport Planning related services.

The Berrys Civil Engineering team can assist you with a wide range of Highways and Transport Planning related services. We have a wealth of shared knowledge and experience of highways planning and development within both the private and the public sectors. We provide highway design and advisory services from scheme inception and concept design through to planning and subsequent detailed scheme design and technical approval of adoptable works packages.

Our engineers have experience of and applied knowledge in key planning and highway guidance and legislation, including the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB), Manual for Streets 1 & 2 (MfS), The Highways Act 1980, Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (TCPA) and National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).  Whatever your objective may be – whether it be the creation of a simple new access, or the design of complex junctions and new roads – Berrys can assist by providing efficient bespoke design solutions at every stage and navigate you through the planning process to scheme delivery.

We can produce bespoke Transport Notes and Transport Statements to support your proposals whether it be residential, leisure, commercial or other, to demonstrate to the Local Planning Authority (LPA) that the proposed development can be accommodated without detriment to the operational safety and capacity of the local highway network. This includes assessment of the sustainability of the site location in relation to walking and cycling infrastructure, public transport, and the wider strategic highway network, in addition to assessment of access visibility and vehicle swept path movements. We work closely with our clients to understand existing/proposed site operation to establish a baseline for traffic movements, for comparison and assessment against the anticipated proposed development traffic movements.

Many of us at Berrys have previously worked in local government highway teams, so we understand the complex issues faced by local highway authorities (LHAs) when reviewing planning applications. Should your proposals be faced with highway related concerns or objections from the LHA, we can provide advice and solutions to overcome these. We routinely provide solutions to overcome highway issues such as, but not limited to:

Access visibility and road safety

• Forward visibility assessments

• Vehicle swept path assessments

• Parking

• Public Rights of Way (PRoW)

Traffic calming design

• Public realm design

• Junction assessment and design

• Transport Statements including development trip generation

• Construction Traffic Management Plans

We have a good working relationship with many nearby LHAs, and we have a good understanding of their needs and expectations. This means we can work efficiently to address and overcome key highway issues, thereby saving our clients unnecessary construction and consultant costs.

We provide road and site levels design solutions across the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. We provide detailed design adoptable works packages and manage technical approvals under Section 38, Section 184, and Section 278 of the Highways Act 1980, alongside S104 and SuDS approvals. To help us work efficiently we use the latest 3D design software packages from Causeway and Autodesk, including PDS, Flow, Civils 3D, and Vehicle Tracking.

We are multi-disciplinary in our approach to design. When designing sites this allows us, to holistically apply our knowledge of Flood Risk Management, Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS), and sewers. This allows us to identify key constraints and solutions from the outset, thereby preventing clashes and ensuring that efficient and innovative solutions are provided.
