Heritage Shown To Boost Wellbeing

Historic England recently researched the benefits of Heritage assets to the country’s wellbeing.

The research report, funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), looked into the relationship between historic buildings and wellbeing, including mental health and life satisfaction. The study concluded a positive relationship between the density of heritage assets near a person’s home and their self-reported life satisfaction.

The presence of heritage assets was found to benefit people from all social backgrounds, neighbourhoods and regions. When analysing the types of heritage assets, it was shown that the abundance of assets made the greatest impact rather than the rarity of the buildings. Therefore, the more heritage assets in your neighbourhood, regardless of their grading, the greater the positive impact on your wellbeing.

This research further supports the benefits of looking after our country’s historic buildings and features. Much of our discussion with clients’ centres around preserving historically and architecturally interesting buildings to benefit future generations’ understanding. However, this evidence shows that these buildings also add to our enjoyment of life on a daily basis.

Investing in heritage will not only provide a long-term legacy but could also improve your life satisfaction and that of your local community.

So, take time to get out and enjoy the heritage-rich landscapes around you!
